Company
History:
T.D.
Hefko founded Hefko Floral Co. in 1912 when he bought the existing
greenhouses and flower shop at 603 W. Fifth Street in Marshfield
from I. Macklin. He
expanded the greenhouse operation and began delivering flowers
throughout central and north central Wisconsin.
During this time, Hefko Floral printed its own cards,
stationery, and price lists on a printing press owned by Hefko.
Hefko also operated a branch shop in the downtown area of
Marshfield until the Depression.
T.D.
Hefko’s son Terry R. Hefko, along with his wife Betty, purchased
the Company in the 1950’s and updated the greenhouses, growing
equipment, and gift shop. During
this time, the entire Hefko family of seven children was involved in
and virtually grew up at the greenhouse. It was also during this era
that the Hefko Floral Open House tradition, still in existence today
and growing in popularity throughout the area, was begun.
Terry and Betty Hefko became more active in trade
associations and in community volunteer work. They also opened a branch shop in the Central Plaza (now the
City Hall Plaza) in downtown Marshfield during the 1970’s and
eventually moved the entire operation there when a fire destroyed
much of the Fifth Street location in the winter of 1978.
In
1988, upon the retirement of Terry and Betty Hefko, their daughter
Lizz Koenig, then an officer of the Company, and her husband Chuck
purchased Hefko Floral. Lizz
and Chuck remodeled the store and fully computerized the Company’s
bookkeeping and order-taking system. They also have developed a
customer database that has helped the Company communicate with its
customers. Chuck and
Lizz’s son, Seth, became an officer in the corporation in the
early 1990’s and currently serves as marketing manager and web
designer to the corporation.
Hefko
Floral Co. today employs twelve people and is growing to meet the challenges of
doing business in the new millennium.
